Trick Or Treat

Don’t buy Halloween decorations; have your kids make them

Halloween can be a fun time for kids and adults. But the amount of money you spend on the festivities can be down right scary. Family savings expert Kimberly Danger gave us some tips on how to take the fright out of your budget.

Theres no need to buy Halloween decorations; have your kids make them. Itll be fun and youll save. Try making a toilet paper pumpkin. All you need is a roll of toilet paper, some orange fabric, brown craft foam, and green pipe cleaner. Wrap the orange fabric around the toilet paper roll and tuck in the top of the roll. Roll up your brown craft foam and stick it in the middle of the roll as a stem. Then add the green pipe cleaner as your vine.

How about a spooky ghost? Just take a sheet of wax paper and glue a piece of white yarn on it in the shape of a ghost. Then fill in the middle with a moderate amount of glue. As soon as its dry, peel the ghost off the wax paper and youll have a ghost window decoration.

Halloween costumes can be expensive, especially those purchased at a store. So why not make your own and save some cash? One option is a spa beauty. All you need is a robe, a towel to wrap around your head, a facial mask, and some slippers or flip-flops. You can even make your own facial mask by mixing 3tbsp. cornstarch, 1tbsp. flour, ¾ cups light corn syrup, and ¼ cups water. Divide into small containers and add green food coloring, then apply with a cotton swab.

Maybe your kid wants to be a fisherman. Just get a pair of jeans, flannel shirt, life preserver and floppy hat. Or if you have kids that play sports, dress them up in their gear. A tourist is another low budget idea. Grab some shorts and a shirt with a city or landmark on it. Add a camera around the neck, sunglasses and fanny pack to finish the costume.

Once Halloween is over, shop the clearance racks for costumes up to 75% off. Then youll be all set for next year.
